In an era when college access feels increasingly out of reach for underserved communities, Brooklyn Lab Charter School (LAB) is rewriting the narrative — and they just proved it with undeniable flair.
On May 28th 2025, the school hosted its annual college announcement ceremony, aptly titled “College Looks Like Me,”and it was nothing short of transformative. In a stunning display of academic perseverance and cultural pride, the graduating class of 2025 revealed over $2.1 million in scholarships earned — a staggering figure that speaks volumes about the school's commitment to closing the opportunity gap for Brooklyn youth.

The ceremony turned into a full-on celebration of identity, ambition, and Brooklyn resilience when viral rap phenom Zeddy Will took the stage for a surprise performance and keynote. Known for his comedic wit and bouncy singles like “Freak You” and “Cha Cha,” Zeddy is more than a social media sensation—he’s the voice of a generation learning how to thrive on their own terms. And for Brooklyn LAB’s seniors, his presence meant everything.
Before hitting the mic, Zeddy shared an introspective message about how college shaped his own path, emphasizing the importance of staying true to yourself in rooms that weren’t built with you in mind. His words echoed the ethos of this year’s class—many of whom are first-generation college students, caretakers, or youth who have endured unimaginable loss on their journey to the finish line.

Among those honored were 39 students accepted to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as Howard, Morehouse, Morgan State, and North Carolina Central. Two standouts—Iyanna M., heading to Howard after the loss of her mother, and ZayAndre W., accepted to City Tech following the passing of his father—were lifted up as symbols of strength and perseverance.
The entire event unfolded at the Major R. Owens Health & Wellness Center, where students announced their college commitments one by one, posing for photos with Zeddy and being cheered on by classmates, staff, and community leaders.
The high-energy crowd erupted as Zeddy performed his hits, transforming the ceremony into a celebration not just of where these students are going, but of where they came from—and who they are becoming.
“Class of 2025 — a class committed to critical thinking and individual success. A class courageous in the face of countless challenges. A class actively ready to be fully themselves.” — Brooklyn LAB 12th Grade Teachers
Brooklyn LAB continues to prove what’s possible when schools nurture potential beyond the classroom. With music, movement, and a message, “College Looks Like Me” was more than a ceremony—it was a love letter to the future of Black and Brown excellence in higher education.
