In the ever-evolving world of hip-hop, an artist’s rise to fame often feels unstoppable — until life, fate, or society throws a curveball. Some careers, full of promise and momentum, took unexpected turns that no one could have predicted. In this article, we’re spotlighting a mix of artists, both living and deceased, whose steady climb was disrupted by events beyond their control. From sudden tragedies to industry pressures and personal battles, we explore where their success seemed destined to go — and how it all changed in an instant.

Khadimou Rassoul Cheikh Fall, better known as Sheck Wes, hailing from Harlem, NY, is known for his 2017 hit “Mo Bamba”, apart of his Mudboy album. The song peaked at No. 6 on the billboard hot 100. The song was a college favorite back in 2017 and was often played at raves and such.
WES was at the height of his career, until rumors sparked about a domestic dispute between the rapper and newfound love interest with the singer/model Justine Skye. Rumors reported back in 2019 of a physical dispute between the rapper and model. The domestic dispute between the two really put a damper on the rapper’s career as people began labeling the rapper as a “woman beater”, and the focus started being removed from his music and onto personal matters.
With the rapper’s career having been so fresh and two years in at that point, fans were not expecting the turn in his career to go the domestic route. After allegations of Wes supposedly being an abuser, spotlight went away from his music and more so into his personal life. This jeaopardized a lot of brand deals and future collaborations for the rapper, as it caused a taint to his image.
Many believe the rappers career can definitely make a comeback, with the right collaborations and positive press. It would be very interesting to see the rapper take the stage at events like rolling loud and/or summer jam. With the right creative push, WES can resurface as his 2017 self reincarnated.

Bobby Shmurda, born Ackquille Pollard, exploded onto the music scene in 2014 with the viral hit “Hot Nigga,” a song that quickly became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its infectious beat, catchy lyrics, and the now-iconic “Shmoney Dance.” The track earned him a deal with Epic Records and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, firmly establishing him as a fresh voice in New York rap. His follow-up single, “Bobby Bitch,” kept the momentum going, and his street credibility and charisma drew widespread attention. At just 19 years old, Shmurda was considered one of the most promising young artists in hip-hop, bringing the raw energy of Brooklyn to a national stage.
That promising trajectory was cut short later that same year when he was arrested along with several members of his GS9 crew on serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and weapons possession. Prosecutors alleged that GS9 was a violent street gang involved in multiple shootings. In 2016, Shmurda took a plea deal, receiving a seven-year sentence. He was released in February 2021 after serving nearly seven years, but his return to music has been uneven. Despite a warm reception from fans and peers, including Quavo and Meek Mill, his post-prison releases have struggled to gain the same traction as his earlier work. The time away significantly disrupted his artistic momentum, leaving him to rebuild his career in a changed industry.

From 2017-2020 6ix9ine had a good run dropping his Mixtape Day69 which, other than “GUMMO”, included his top hits, “KEKE” and “KOODA”, all featured on the Billboard charts for top 200. His career has included features from established industry acts such as Nicki Minaj on “FEFE” and “TROLLZ” which brought him up to #1 and #2 on the Billboard charts. However, at the height of his success, his involvement with the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods and other legal troubles began to unfurl, along with the news that 6ix9ine cooperated - or shall we say “snitched” - with the authorities granting his eventual release in 2020. While he continued to drop music like “Gooba” his previous legal situation stirred up a lot of controversy in the streets, and the people were not going for it. Despite his legal situation and the public’s perception of his cooperation with the federal government, 6ix9ine took it upon himself to continue his internet trolling persona and have constant feuds with any celebrity he came across in an effort to keep relevance in the media.
Considering his recent track record of trouble with the law, even post-RICO, Would he be able to ever bounce back and reclaim the hold he had when he first appeared on the scene?

YNW Melly was on a fast track to stardom after dropping hits like "Murder on My Mind" and "Mixed Personalities" featuring Kanye West. His ability to fuse pain, melody, and vulnerability gave him a unique voice in the crowded space that was late 2010’s SoundCloud. By the time 2019's XXL Freshman list dropped, Melly was poisedto be the next superstar in line. But that same year, everything changed.Melly found himself arrested and charged with the double murder of his close friends YNW Sakchaser and Juvy — and suddenly, all that momentum vanished. While he continued to release music from behind bars, the situation overshadowed his artistry and created a complicated legacy.
Many fans still hold out hope for a comeback if he's released and clears his name, but even after the declaration of a mistrial, his legal situation continues to drag on and remains as complicated as ever. Even if he beats the charges, rebuilding a career after years away from the spotlight — and with such heavy allegations — it might seem difficult to make it back to the mainstream scene. However, with his raw talent and strong industry ties, including affiliations with OTF and YSL, there’s still a real chance he could reclaim his spot and make a serious impact.

Sheff G, born Michael Williams, emerged as a pivotal figure in the Brooklyn drill scene with his 2017 breakout single, "No Suburban," a track that not only showcased his raw talent but also positioned him as a local star. His debut project, The Unluccy Luccy Kid (2019), displayed his versatility by blending melodic tracks with gritty street anthems. Collaborations with Sleepy Hallow, such as "Flows" and "Tip Toe," became New York anthems, further solidifying his influence. However, his ascent was interrupted by legal challenges, including a 2021 incarceration on weapons charges, which slowed his momentum but added to his street legend status.
In May 2023, Sheff G was among 32 individuals indicted on serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and weapons possession, related to alleged gang activities in Brooklyn. Prosecutors accused him of using his music earnings to fund and encourage acts of violence, alleging that he offered money and jewelry as incentives. Notably, he was accused of orchestrating a 2020 shooting that resulted in one death and multiple injuries, and subsequently hosting a celebratory dinner. After being released on bail in April 2024, Sheff G continued to face legal proceedings. In March 2025, he pleaded guilty to second-degree attempted murder and conspiracy charges, resulting in a five-year prison sentence followed by five years of supervised release. Despite these challenges, Sheff G's contributions to Brooklyn drill remain significant, and his fans continue to await his return to music upon completion of his sentence. Sheff G right now has a chance to bless us with great music & innovate the New York scene before going back to jail, so hopefully he shifts the culture this summer before going back in.
